I once had a dream. I dreamed that I would be helping leaders find the clarity they needed to realize their purpose. That I would make enough money to support my family and give my husband the choice to pursue his dream…becoming a high school teacher. I dreamed that my children would be able to choose the college of their choice without worrying about taking on debt and of being debt-free with the mortgage paid off. My dream was to have all of this financial abundance WHILE loving my work AND feeling like I was not working at all.
I dreamed that people would be attracted to the work that I do and that I would have a team who supported me. But everyday I forced myself to wake up from that dream and dismiss it as if it were not possible. Not that the life I was living was bad, it just wasn’t my IDEAL life. Who gets EVERYTHING they long for? Who gets to work from the beach, travel with clients, love every minute of their work? After all, I was a mum with four children living in suburban Massachusetts. There were not many entrepreneurs around me or opportunities for me to connect with other big dreamers.
STEP 1 – Design Your Day
Grab a piece of paper and describe your IDEAL workday. You can start with: “I wake up and have XYZ for breakfast with XYZ…” You get the picture. Describe what you eat, who you eat with, what kind of clothes you wear, what kind of house you live in, the people in your life, the kind of work you do – everything. The more details, the better.
STEP 2 – Design Your Work
What would you do for FREE all day long? Understanding that we can use our unique skills and turn them into a business is the first step to designing a life and work we love. Make a list of all the things that you are good at – some of which you may take for granted. Include the things you LOVE to help people with, especially those things people come to YOU for help.
STEP 3 – Design Your Positioning
Now, let’s put it together. The fact that you enjoy doing something does not necessarily mean it is something people want or need. For each skill, think of a few problems people have that might need that skill. Be creative! Think of jobs or solutions that are sold in the marketplace. Once you find a problem your skill can solve, all you have to do is position your unique talent as a solution to that problem.
I believe that you CAN design a life and work that you love – a life that is fulfilling, exciting, AND financially abundant!
