I’m on the airplane headed to Hawaii for the winter. As a full-time nomad, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to visit and live in some of the world’s most beautiful places. From Ecuador to Grenada, from Croatia to Botswana, and 40 more glorious places in-between.
But there is something magical about Hawaii that keeps calling us back. So here we are, me, my hubs, and our golden retriever Maybe, on the plane crossing the Pacific again, headed to a tiny rock in the middle of the sea.
Perhaps it’s the expansive wide open space, black lava fields as far as I can see. Or it could be the plumeria scented air with brightly colored birds soaring up above. Or the blue-blue ocean inviting me to come play with sea turtles, pods of dolphins, and mighty whales breaching just offshore.
Or I suppose it could be that somehow time moves slower on the island, and when I’m there I have room to think, to create, to breathe, to write, to hike, to swim, to allow my racing thoughts to settle and find my soul’s center.
Whatever the ultimate reason, I feel like I can breathe when I’m surrounded by nature, when people have time to stop and ‘talk story’, when the spirit of Aloha is woven through every day with smiles and kindness, and love.
Several years ago, I wrote my second book, featuring my husband’s art, titled, “Live Your Dream.”
In it, I wrote:
Some people dream
Of a life full of travel,
No destination to reach,
Let the map unravel
Let’s wander around
And enjoy the sightseeing
When there’s nowhere to “get to”
We’re happy just being
With the road as our guide,
We’ll discover great places
Exploring new lands,
Living out of suitcases.
After I wrote this book, lots of people asked me about living my dream. If I’ve learned one thing, it’s that to live your dream, you’re gonna have to leap.
Here is the thing about leaping…Many of us want to keep one foot in our current life, where it’s safe and known and we want to streeeeeetch our other foot across to the life of our dreams. Always wanting at least one foot on the ground.
But a leap, by its very definition, has a moment where we are utterly and absolutely off the ground.
The plane is going to land in a few minutes and I’ll step outside with both my feet on the ground having successfully made another leap.
I’ll be greeted by a warm breeze, the scent of the ocean, and the fiery energy of Pele.
And my heart will tell me, at least for now…this nomad is home.
Take a leap, live your dream 💕
